SOFTWARE EVERY CIVIL ENGINEER MUST KNOW by HASSAN TAHIR

Why software are important in our lives?? Well software are the tools which makes our work easy by saving our time. If we talk about Engineering & Technology, software make a great impact on our daily life working. Well if we talk about Civil Engineering, there are lots of software related to Structure Modelling, Analysis and Design, Construction of Roads, Design of pipes and water related structures.
Well in this article I am going to discuss the software according to their use in the field of Civil Engineering.
For Analysis (Support Reactions, Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagram) of Determinate Beams, Truss and Columns:
1. MD SOLIDS
2. RISA 2D
3. STAAD.PRO

For Analysis (Support Reactions, Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagram) of Indeterminate Beams, Truss and Columns:
1. RISA 2D
2. STAAD,PRO

MD SOLIDS, RISA 2D and STAAD.PRO are analysis software's used to find support reactions, shear and bending moment diagrams of structural members. They are accurate and easy to use.

For 2d and 3d designs
of houses, buildings or any other civil engineering structures like dams, bridges etc:

1. AutoCAD 2D, 3D
2. Revit Architecture, Structure
3. Google Sketchup

AutoCAD is a very basic software that every Civil Engineer should known because it is a very common and very handy software used in almost every company around the world. If you are expert init, you also have a great scope as a Freelancer. 
  • REVIT:


Talking about Revit Architecture, it is a 4D software and very good for designing 2D and 3D structures and less time consuming as compared to AutoCAD, you can design interior and exterior of structure and also render the structure in a very quick time, I will talk about this software in my upcoming articles.
  • GOOGLE SKETCHUP:

Google Sketchup is a designing software sponsored by Google and also very easy to use, you can easily place materials in your model.

 For Modelling, Analysis and Design of RCC (Reinforced Concrete Structure) structures:
1. ETABS
2, SAP2000
3. Perform 3D

ETABS, SAP2000 and Perform 3D are used for Modelling, analysis and Design of 3D RCC structures. Well in recent past, structural designers have to design manually RCC structures which is very time consuming. well with the use of these software's, now structural designers can easily Model and Design the RCC structures.

Software used to design for Road Construction:
1. CIVIL 3D


CIVIL 3D is one of the best software for designing and construction of Roads, it is a complete package. You can design road layouts, cross section maps, detailing etc.
